I've been to a number of weddings over the past few years between friends and family and never really realized how strange it would be to be on the other side of the event. I think the thing that really suprised me is that there are things in the course of the night that are universally acknowledged as being dumb and no one likes them, but you still end up having to do them anyway (yes, I'm talking about the "removing of the garter" which I had completely forgotten about until it happened)...
The other thing that kinda suprised me is that even though "everyone" tells you that you won't eat much or drink much on the day I never believed it. Well, it's true. I think I had 8 or 10 drinks throughout the night, but I think only one made it past a quarter of the glass. The remainder got put down during the course of talking to people or dancing or whatever and were lost. Having said that, I did make it all of the way through a few glasses of water since I was so thirsty.
And for those of you who couldn't make it, yes I did kind of screw up twice. Once during the ceremony (why do they bother giving you a handout as the groom? clearly I couldn't really bring it up with me and read from it) when I couldn't remember exactly what I was supposed to say and it seemed like Clodagh and the Father McCarthy were looking at me like I should be saying more so I threw in an extra "in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit". Oops. The other when I forgot about a quarter of my speech and stopped to acknowledged how weird it is to be looking at a room full of people looking at you and listening to you - if you were there and didn't like my speech, trust me that it would have been really funny and good. And only a minute or two longer. This is what you get when you write it at 1pm on the day you're supposed to give it.
On a non-wedding note, at one stage in my life I'm convinced that I had worked out how to travel without jet-lag. That time has passed me by and I'm suffering from a bit of jet lag (or maybe I can still blame the headwound?!? ;-)) but it does give you an extra few hours in the morning to actually get stuff done. Silver lining in everything.
